What is Demand response of the power grid?

Demand Response encourages you to use energy during periods of excess solar energy, ensuring that this green energy does not go to waste. By participating in Demand Response, you automatically earn 100 NOK per month, regardless of whether you follow the energy use suggestions or not. This amount is paid as a monthly discount on your grid rent. It is possible to earn more than 100 NOK per month by following the energy use prompts.

How does Demand Response work?

Demand Response works by sending prompts to use energy at specific times of the day when there is an excess of solar energy. For example, you might receive a suggestion to charge your car between 12:00 and 13:00, or to turn on your water heater between 11:00 and 12:00. These prompts are based on the expected solar energy production for the following day. In the Abralife app, you will have an overview of which energy use suggestions apply for the next day, and you have the option to deactivate these if you wish.

Earn money by following the prompts

You can earn more than 100 NOK per month by following multiple energy use prompts. For each prompt you follow, you will be compensated on your grid rent with: (Spot price at the actual hour you follow the prompt – (lowest spot price of the day - 30 øre/kWh)) * number of kWh. This means that the more prompts you follow, the more money you earn. If you earn 90 NOK in a month, you will be compensated with 100 NOK on your grid rent for that month, but if you earn 110 NOK, you will be compensated with 110 NOK.

Example of Demand Response

Let's say an energy use prompt is to charge your car from 13:00 to 14:00. You follow this prompt and have an 8 kW charger. The electricity price at that hour is 2 NOK/kWh, so you pay 16 NOK for the charging on your electricity bill. You will then be compensated on your grid rent so that the charging cost is the lowest spot price of the day minus 30 øre. Let's assume the lowest spot price of the day was 1 NOK/kWh. You would have paid 0.7 NOK/kWh for the charging, which totals 5.60 NOK. The compensation you receive on your grid rent for this charging is then 16 NOK - 5.60 NOK, which amounts to 10.40 NOK.
